The bridge between coffee consumers and the Specialty Coffee Industry

Do you do this? Customer Etiquette 101

Customers are great. They make me laugh when they do or say silly things. I usually don’t let the more complicated customers bother me.  Here are five tips to make your cafe’ experience better and go smoother. Are you a café customer that tends to do any of these?

1.  Talk on the phone while ordering

Talking on the phone shows me, as cashier, you are not ready to order. Your conversation is obviously more important. Please hang up and we will be happy to serve you.

2. Stare at the menu while holding up the line

The customers behind you know what they want, so please step aside until you are ready. Or let me know what type of drink you are looking for.

3. Are you at your usual Café? No? Then we may have the same thing, but with a different name.

Each café has its own menu, and only sells what’s up there. If you don’t see what you like, let us know what  type of drink you do like. We don’t mind offering suggestions for something close to what you usually to.

4. Order something when you really don’t know what it is

We made exactly what you asked for so it’s not our fault if you don’t like it.

5.  Tell the Barista to make “what you usually get” when we don’t usually make it

If we aren’t used to making your drink,  don’t expect us to  know what you want. Next time the employee who usually makes your drink is here,  ask what it’s called so the rest of us know what to make for you when they aren’t here.

qotd- What else do customers say or do that aren’t favorable?

If a customer isn't specific about the amount of sugar I'll ask how many packets they like and if they still don't say, I'll just put some on the side or point them to the condiment bar.As for a latte, I suggest them tasting it first, especially if it's their first time at the cafe. Then, if for some reason they still feel they need it sweater, I'll offer adding flavored syrup. You can't prevent what they are already going to do though. No matter how nice I try to be or how difficult a customer may be, the thought of spitting in a drink would never cross my mind. It takes tough skin to work in the food industry, that's all their is to it.
