Cappuccino vs. Cafe’ Latte

Now that it’s cold, Cappuccino’s and, especially, Cafe’ Latte’s are the most popular espresso drinks. Unfortunately, not many people know the difference between them.

With corporate advertising, words like cappuccino and latte are thrown around like a basketball.  So, when someone goes from a franchise to an independent cafe’ the drinks are completely different. The main reason these drinks taste so different is because most larger cafe’s are there to give the average joe their buzz. But smaller cafe’s, especially independent, care more about quality, taste and educating customers. It’s great that things can be changed and updated, but some things should never change from its traditional version.

How do you remember the difference? A Cafe’ Latte has a lot more milk than a cappuccino.

A Cappuccino is 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, 1/3 froth. This drink is light in weight and a tad less strong than a straight shot of espresso. A great Barista will have a nice silky mix of milk and foam. Once poured over the espresso, there will be a brownish tint on top of the drink. So, when you drink the cappuccino, you can taste all three, espresso, milk, and froth, in one sip. The traditional sized cup is 5oz.

A Cafe’ Latte is 1/4 espresso and 3/4 steamed milk. This drink is much heavier in weight and great if you want to start drinking espresso concoctions. 7oz. is the traditional size cup.

Very informative. so if you’re having a 20oz latte the proper ratio would be 4oz espresso and 16oz milk? I can usually only handle a triple shot.

Hi Josh, thanks for your question.

Looking at this as by ratio, then yes, you are correct. Although I personally keep my latte’s 16oz. and smaller.

It’s a personal preference on the strength of your latte. One shot of espresso has about half the caffeine of a standard 180 mL (6oz.) cup of drip brewed coffee, which varies from cafe’ to cafe’.

Do you drink a Latte for flavor, caffeine, or both?
