The bridge between coffee consumers and the Specialty Coffee Industry

Coffee With Dad

When I think of my dad, I picture him with a cup glued to his hand and wreaking of burnt coffee. For as long as I can remember, he would drink any coffee. Still does. I cringe thinking about it. Maxwell House in the mornings, then anything hot and bitter from the closest restaurant or cafe throughout the day.

Despite his lack of taste in coffee, he was the reason I got into the coffee industry in the first place and I thank him for that. When we visit each other now, I always seek out the best cafe’ in hopes of converting him to better coffee.

There is a special bond that coffee seems to have with Father’s and children. Whether the quality of coffee is there or not, the conversation between us and our dad’s certainly makes up for it. Here are just a couple wonderful coffee conversations with dad. Happy Father’s Day to whomever you call “dad”.

“I would say that the conversation between my dad and I when we were drinking an expensive coffee for the first time. I had won two pounds of Essse Caffe Selezione Espresso. The only thing I was asked was to review it after we received it. Because it was expensive my dad and I treated it like wine (drinking it in wine glasses) and started pretending we were wine tasters. It was fun. (For the record the coffee was good – neither of us normally drink coffee black but this was good).” ~ Lisa – Caffeine Empress

“My husband and I frequently have coffee in the evenings on the porch.  It always brings us around to talking about my dad. We used to go visit him, either sitting on his front porch or his back porch, depending on the season, and drinking coffee until the very wee hours of the morning. My dad always made coffee in a percolator – and made it strong!  We would drink coffee and visit from 6 or 7 in the evening until 2 or 3 in the mornings!  It was always fun, he would tell us stories about serving in the Korean war or coming home and working as a cowboy in Northern Nevada. Those are dearly remembered days as my father no longer will see us as he is not well. Sometimes, I break out our old enamel-ware percolator to make coffee so we can reminisce in true style. I can never make the coffee as well as my dad though.” ~ Sharla Long

“My favorite conversation over coffee was when my dad and I were talking about what college I’ll be transferring to this fall. This was my favorite conversation because dad was able to get away from work and I, away from homework to catch up and talk about not only college but what other goals I had during and after college and also about what was going on with dad and his work. We had a better understanding about what the other had to deal with day to day. Having dad and I listen each other was great, I treasured every moment of it. He’s such a hard worker, and always being gone on business trips, with little time together, this gave us time to talk over a warm cup of coffee which felt so soothing.” ~ Lauren V.
