2012 Recap

What a year and they only go by faster as we get older. But coffee helps accomplish all that needs doing. And boy was this another big year. The biggest yet, actually.

Although I miss this blog and geeking out about coffee with you, there are other things now that need more of my attention. With that said, I will continue to write as often as possible that time allows. Once I am more efficient in organizing my time to include this blog into my new venture, I’ll be sure to write more often.

Picking up where we left off

If you’ve been reading along for any amount of time, I really appreciate it. You probably noticed the site was down at one point while I was switching hosting providers. As with any learning curve, things take time, but it’s the only way for me to learn something new on my own. At least the site is back up 🙂 .

Now I’m working on recovering all the posts up to this point. I think I finally figured it out so expect a lot of past posts early next year.

New flavors

This year I finally developed a love for espresso. So far I’ve been obsessed with all the different manual brewers. Call it being picky but there have only been two coffees that I’ve been able to drink espresso straight- Dancing Goats Blend from Batdorf & Bronson and the Espresso Blend from my local roaster, Carrboro Coffee.

Now, I like to experiment with different milk, dairy alternatives, and how they effect taste in espresso-based drinks: Espresso Macchiato, Cortado, SCAA Cappuccino and regular lattes.

Hobby happy

For the first half of the year, I felt the need to step away from all things coffee and focus on freelance writing and put my time and energy into the Pay it Forward with Coffee project.

I had a few client projects here and there. This time focusing on writing copy as one of my career paths made me realize that although I enjoy it very much, my true passion has and will always be in coffee. Writing is more enjoyable as a hobby.

Now, I am deeply invested emotionally and physically into the coffee world. My dream finally came true. I have my own coffee place.

Before I tell you about it, let me back up and explain how it happened…

New caffeinated beginnings

There is this little coffee drive thru in town I had been wanting to check out for a long time and never got around to it. One day in August, I decided to finally go see the place. It was kitschy, cozy, a great concept and in an amazing location. I got to talking to the Owner and found out that the place was for sale. This was a “right-place, right-time” situations.

Not one week earlier had I been dreaming out loud with my boyfriend about having my own coffee shop. He was getting into coffee and wanting to do have a family business. I told him it was for sale and everything was a blur the rest of the month. October first, the place was ours.

So for the past three months we have been learning everything from choosing coffees and supplies to ordering inventory without running out of stock, accounting and merchant services.

Going in, we knew there would be a lot involved. Especially running as a two man show starting out. But, until you actually do everything yourself, you won’t truly understand how passionate you really are.  And you’ll learn that having your own coffee shop isn’t all glamorous. But it’s perfect for the right people, and very few are cut out to have their own coffee shop.

I’m really excited about what the new year will bring. The to-do list for the coffee drive thru is overwhelming as we will be rebranding, making a bunch of changes and start hiring.

I don’t plan to write much about the business, especially on here. But, I do plan to document my experience into notes and link to the business website once it’s up.

  1. Hi, it’s so great to hear another ‘dream come true’ moment. Opening a cafe will certainly be hard work but working on a dream will always bring passion and love for the job. I’m sure your cafe will do well as long as you put your heart and soul into it. Being a coffee enthusiast myself, I wanted to open a cafe a few years back but it takes a lot of courage to go into such venture and I’m still fighting to gain one. However, I will hold on to my dream and hope in a couple of years time, I have something up to share with all people who love coffee. Here’s wishing you all the best in your new venture and I hope we will hear more from you about your experience, be it ups or downs, because all experience only makes us a better person. Cheers to a new year and a new cafe!

      Thanks for stopping by and your encouragement. It does take a lot of courage for risks involved, the learning curve, finances, etc. Hang in there. Dreams take a lot of work before they happen. Keep your end goal in mind, but don’t forget to always be working towards it along the way.
