demitasse via flickrA Demitasse, pronounced [dem-i-tas], literally means “half cup” due to typically being half the size of a full cup.

Demitasse originated in France in the 1800’s and made of porcelain or fine china and decorated elaborately or simple.

It’s purpose is for drinking stronger coffee such as espresso (single or double shots) and Turkish coffee. Today’s demitasse average cup measures around 2-2 1/2 inch tall with a 4-4 1/2 inch diameter saucer. It may also be served with a demitasse spoon on the saucer.
